HEALTH & FITNESS - The NYC Marathon Route: Key Sights Enroute

Each November, runners from around the world gather in the Big Apple to participate in one of the world’s most famous marathons: the New York City Marathon. The marathon route takes runners through all five boroughs of New York City: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan, covering 26.2 miles of incredible sights, iconic neighbourhoods and diverse cultures

Here’s a breakdown of what makes each section of the race unforgettable.

Start Line: Staten Island – Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
The race kicks off on Staten Island, near Fort Wadsworth, with the dramatic ascent over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Runners ascend one of the longest suspension bridges in the Western Hemisphere, where they are rewarded with breathtaking views of the New York Harbour and the Manhattan skyline. This two-mile bridge is the only part of the marathon without cheering crowds, so runners get a quiet but inspiring start.

Brooklyn: From Bay Ridge to Williamsburg
Once off the Verrazzano Bridge, runners are met with enthusiastic crowds and a high-energy atmosphere in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighbourhood. The route continues through neighbourhoods like Sunset Park and Greenpoint, where diverse communities come together to cheer runners on.

In Williamsburg, known for its artsy vibe, runners pass unique graffiti, lively crowds and bustling coffee shops. This leg of the marathon is alive with music, from brass bands to DJs, and includes some of Brooklyn’s iconic spots like the Williamsburg Bridge and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Queens: Long Island City
After crossing the Pulaski Bridge, runners reach Queens around the halfway point, greeted by the warm support of spectators in Long Island City. As one of New York City’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods, this area is known for its impressive views of the Manhattan skyline and its industrial-chic aesthetic, which offers a unique backdrop for the marathon.

Queens is also home to Silvercup Studios, where scenes from famous movies and shows have been filmed, and the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign along the East River, a historic landmark and a popular spot for photos. The borough’s short stretch on the marathon route ends with the challenging climb up the Queensboro Bridge.

Manhattan: The First Leg – Upper East Side
The Queensboro Bridge leads runners into Manhattan, where the thunderous roar of cheering crowds is almost palpable as they enter First Avenue on the Upper East Side. This stretch along First Avenue, often referred to as “the wall of sound,” is lined with spectators that energise runners as they continue northward.

Runners pass several landmarks on this stretch, including the United Nations Headquarters and the iconic Roosevelt Island Tram, as they make their way toward the Bronx.

The Bronx: A Quick but Memorable Visit
Entering the Bronx via the Willis Avenue Bridge, runners get a brief but vibrant taste of the northernmost borough. Although it covers only about a mile, the route in the Bronx brings runners through areas rich in history, such as Mott Haven and the Hub. Here, the streets are lined with high-energy fans, many of whom bring unique Bronx flavour with live music and dance.

Runners exit the Bronx by crossing the Madison Avenue Bridge back into Manhattan, ready to tackle the final miles.

Manhattan: The Final Leg – Central Park Finish Line
Back in Manhattan, runners head down Fifth Avenue along the edge of Central Park. This stretch is physically demanding as it includes a steady incline, but it’s made easier by the supportive crowds and the anticipation of the finish line. Passing iconic spots like the Museum Mile and the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art), runners then enter Central Park, greeted by the beautiful autumn foliage and the cheers of thousands.

The final stretch through Central Park brings runners by Bethesda Fountain and the iconic Central Park Mall. As they near the finish line near Tavern on the Green, they are surrounded by a wall of cheers, signalling the end of their journey in one of the world’s most iconic marathons.
